I am trying to make a table from a picture in a magazine, which has some intricate lathe work that I want to duplicate. The problem is the picture was taken at an unknown angle, and when I try to scale up from the picture my measurements come out screwed up.
Is there something I can do that we allow me to find the right measurements? Is it possible to lay a "grid" on the page and then scale it up from there copy each block onto a larger grid?
This was a popular way of "copying" drawings and making them bigger when I was younger. Reply 12 years ago. I have seen grids used before, but I don't think that a grid can be accurately used for measuring on an angle.
Measuring Building Facades from Photos
I might try to eye the part that I can't properly measure, like catlinsdad said and see how close it looks. A picture is worth a quick drawing lesson Get a copy of your picture and tape some more paper on it so you can establish the vanishing points from your table by extending parallel lines.
If the table is round use your eye to determine the outermost edges of the "box" it is in. Extend all horizontal lines that go back to the vanishing points. Where the lines intersect you will recreate the figure. Extend the lines back to where you can fit a ruler vertically. When you extend the lines back to the vanishing point, what you get is the dimension that you can read off the ruler. Scale up the one side and go from there. If you had an artistic eye and understood how to draw in perspective, perhaps you could scale it from another known dimension in the picture or from another object in the picture.
Extend parallel lines to find the vanishing point in the distance. You may be able to figure out or picture in your mind at what odd angle the picture was taken at. You can then "wireframe" your object to at least get relative dimensions, even with the foreshortened perspective view. Hope this helps. But it's difficult to map 2d data photograph back to a different 2d projection--you don't have any absolute reference points.
Film makers use reference points on a green screen to convert the 2d space they convert from the image to a fairly accurate 3d reference--so a CGI background can be dropped in, and the background will sync with any camera movements.

The math isn't super-difficult, but unless you have a few fixed reference points it's very tough to get an accurate projection Plus you probably have a very small sample photos of the thingie. There is software available that can convert 2d images into an approximate 3d model--but you'd need several frames of the object at different angles.

I can find the general dimensions by using a caliper transferred to a ruler, and use scale factor. The big problem is that lathe work such as the beads and grooves on the closest leg in the picture are partially covered by another object in the picture.

All of our frames are measured by the inside dimensions. For example, if you have a 4x6 image, you will want to order a 4x6 frame. A frame's dimensions refer to the size of its opening. It is a common mistake to think the dimensions are the width and height of its outside edges. However, you want to measure the inside edge.
For example, if you have a 4x6 image, you should order a 4x6 frame regardless of how much bigger than that the frame may be from outside to outside edge. The size of the photograph in the following example is 5x8, which is not one of our standard sizes.
There are two options to choose if you too have this problem. You can order a custom size frameor order a larger standard size frame with a mat cut to make up the difference. When you are ordering your mat the opening size needs to be slightly smaller than your image size so that your image sits nicely below the mat.
You will need to determine how wide of a mat you will need in order for it to fit into a standard size. For a 5x8 image adding 2 inches all the way around mean that the outside mat size is 9x12, the outer mat size is also the size of the readymade frame that needs to be purchased.

This rabbet allows space for the glass, mat, picture and backing to lay inside the frame. Double the rabbet width and subtract it from the adjusted dimensions from Step 1.

How to Measure & Cut Picture Frames
Put on safety goggles. Loosen the angle adjustment knob on the miter saw and swivel the blade left until the angle indicator is at 45 degrees, then tighten. Slide the molding slightly past the path of the saw blade and hold it firmly, keeping your hand a safe distance from the blade. With your opposite hand, turn the saw on and slowly lower the blade though the molding.
Measure from the angled cut of the rabbeted side of the molding and mark the cut length -- calculated in Step 2 -- with a pencil. Loosen the angle adjustment knob on the miter saw and swivel it to the right until the angle indicator is on the degree mark, then tighten. Place the molding on the saw table with the measured portion on the right side of the blade.
Move the molding along the fence until the measurement mark is on the right edge of the saw blade path. Hold the trim firmly in place with your right hand and, with your left hand, slowly cut through the molding. I use the Bosch which has always been good, but the Leica is another brand that is well known, but perhaps a little more pricey. Stretch to what you can afford. Sometimes you just need an old fashioned tape measure. I tend to use an A3 sized clipboard if it is a large building, and a smaller A4 if it is a small building. Use what works best for you, obviously the larger paper you use, the easier it will be to get all your measurements down without getting into a total mess.
Lots of paper!! Sometimes you may draw a general layout, but need another few pages for things like column positions, elevations, services etc. It comes down to personal preference. I always make sure I have a good selection of pens and pencils on a survey.
I have started using one of those three colour pens now which is really helpful — more on that later. Totally invaluable for a site survey — make sure you have a reasonable camera with full charge.
Depending on the site, you may need your hard hat, high visibility jacket and site boots, make sure you check this prior to arriving on site. Before even going to site, try and find out as much about the building as you can. Check out google maps to get an idea of shape, orientation, street view etc. In some cases you can almost sketch out the building before you even arrive on site. Its nice to arrive to do a survey with a bit of familiarity, and understanding of the building.
The planning portal gives you access to planning applications both current and completed, which in some cases include floor plans and various drawings such as site plans, elevations and so on. Any information you can find on the site relating to your building would be useful so it is worth taking a moment to do some investigations here.
It is also important to know why you are measuring the building, as this will determine how detailed your final drawings will need to be. Are you only required to draw plans? Or will you need elevations and sections? If you are needing to draw sections, do you know where the sections need to be taken? Is the drawing for internal renovations, external extension? Is it for planning permission, construction?
Will you require visuals? If so good photographs will be important. Finally before attending site it is important to know if there is any health and safety requirement or risk assessment.
It is unlikely for smaller projects but with more formal construction sites it could be a possibility. Also consider the lone working policy, are you visiting site alone, is the site unoccupied, do you need to report to the office that you have arrived and left? Make sure you check on these things before visiting the site to carry out your measured survey. No spam, no funny business, just useful stuff! This is helpful for when you start to draw out the building.The construction industry is known for its complexity.

How can you do it in a quick and competent way? In this particular use-case, the analysis was carried out for two facades, the roof and the immediate surrounding area.
In order to achieve this, photos were taken using a DJI Phantom 4 Pro drone, equipped with a megapixel, 1-inch imaging sensor camera. But even with these specific requirements, this task was completed in 20 minutes. Using Pix Pro software with medium settingsthe reconstruction of the building in 3D took 40 mins.
In order to conduct a detailed analysis of individual elements, a Dense Point Cloud had to be generated. PixPro software allows you to mark the points of an object with great precision the accuracy is up to the centimeter.
All it takes is to mark the point in 3 different photos and the software accurately calibrates that point automatically. This accurate point placement, allows you to mark even the hard to reach areas — for example the balcony ceiling or the window trim. By connecting points using lines, you can measure the sides of individual objects.
